Opening day for 2024 AHWC season

This week’s outing is to Auripo Road in the Ida valley. Bus will leave corner Walton & Thompson streets at 12:00 noon , with those with surnames A-L duty pack

So what the heck is going on with  the start of my email this week. Well it has come to my attention ,that it is not just teenagers who have a short attention span. Apparently some of their grandparents also have short attention spans. They start reading my emails , but by the time they get down to where we are going and what time. Their attention has wandered and they miss the bus ! So we will see what happens.

Saturday was a typical Central Otago autumn day , blue skies and autumnal colours just waiting for the cameras to come out.  It was a big turnout for opening day this year. All walking groups headed over the Shaky bridge , heading for Graveyard gully. The 10 W3 walkers I think headed on down the river track, behind a big group of nearly 30 walkers in the W2 walking group who looped round Goat gully and dropped back down to the graveyard. I suspect some felt almost ready to stop in the graveyard ,as they climbed up the hill that Barrie  had described as undulating ( translation – up hill  ). Meantime I suspect the 9 W1 walkers had carried on up graveyard gully , before catching up with the W2 walkers at the top of the hill before dropping back down. Despite being the first time out for some new members, everyone survived, so hopefully all will be back this week.. Our couple of runners were away riding their bikes from McRaes near Middlemarch , to the coast.

Club captain Jo welcomed everybody and introduced some of the committee. Including Alison who last month completed a cycle trip from Marlborough sounds to Milford Sound, Raising money for Alzheimer’s ,which will be used to support people in Central Otago. She has raised just under $4000 , so would be grateful if anyone would like to click on the givealittle link to get it up to $4000  Givealittle . I know former club members and current members will have had family and friends affected by dementia in it’s many forms.

I have attached a copy of our 2024 syllabus , which lists all our planned outings for this year, as well as details on how to pay your subs, committee members      etc.

If you would like to share photos taken on our harrier outings  , you can send them to photos@alexharriers.co.nz . I can not guarantee they will get into the emails, As some weeks we get none ,other weeks we receive dozens of them.

Duty pack ,was does it mean .Duty pack alternates each week ,those with surnames starting with A-L and the names M-Z.  You bring a plate for afternoon tea. Load the afternoon tea gear from the trailer into the bus , set the billy boiling  ,pack up after the outing

A good source of information is available on our website www.alexharriers.co.nz and click on the tab  About AHWC

Well that’s about it for this week. I will not be there as I am on call for work this week , so hope you enjoy Auripo road. remember the tunnels and bring a torch if you didn’t have carrots for lunch
