final harrier outing for 2022

Saturday the final outing for the 2022 harrier season , the weather god delivered in spades , blue skies , sunshine and some warmth from the sun as well. There only appeared to be about 21 members who turned up for a walk at 11am.

3 W3 walkers wandered along the rail trail towards airport road , before turning back to the Alex Bowling Club. The W1 walkers headed up Hillview Road , to take in a walk around the Alex Airport and return. Although one went his own way ,there’s always one ,isn’t there. Meantime the larger group of W2 walkers headed down Boundary Road. They then explored what scrambling means ,engaged four wheel drive and took off around the 4WD tracks in Ngapara Pools area. Eventually the came out near airport road, before crossing over to the golf course , returning to the ABC via the rail trail.

The big cats claimed lunch was ready at 1pm , but the W1s were not back , so lunch was delayed by another 30 minutes or so. About another 20 members mysteriously appeared for lunch ,where they came from is any one’s guess. Certainly had not been out walking in the morning. Plenty of leftovers even with those harrier hawks swooping in for seconds. I did try suggesting Barrie must have hidden the whitebait patties out the back ,but the other cats claimed he was lying. No whitebait. I’ll keep working on it. May get surprised one day and find it works. However we did manage some apple crumble and ice cream..

And now a message calling for help

Could you email out an S.O.S. to Harrier members regarding volunteers for this coming weekend’s imperilled NZ Moto-trials in Alexandra. See my original email below that I forwarded to Mike. The Dunstan High School first fifteen cancelled very close to the date and has left the event in the lurch. They urgently need 12 people for three days or 36 people doing one day each. Anyone willing could email me at Thompsonfamily@actrix.co.nz. The Southern Trials Group are hosting the New Zealand Moto – Trials Championships in Alexandra over Labour weekend. More than 90 riders from through-out the country are here to compete on some of the best trials terrain in the country. The sport requires Observers to score each ride based on some very simple rules like how many times they put their foot down. Unfortunately and nearly at the last minute the sports group engaged to Observe the riders while earning money for their club have pulled out leaving the event in jeopardy. If your group of clubmates or friends have a day spare or two and could be on site from 9:00 until 4:15 for a donation of $100 per person per day could they please contact Grant Anderson - GrantandDot7@gmail.com. Locations are SH8 approx 3 km from the bridge on Sunday and above the Robert’s orchard Hawley’s Road, Blackmans on Saturday and Monday. Observers need to watch riders carefully and fairly and most enjoy watching the range of skills on display from competitors aged 6 – 70! Bring your lunch, a sunhat and good footwear.
